Why Germans choose Australia
Why 200,000+ Germans visit Australia every year.
German roots
1838
year German Lutherans founded the Barossa Valley
Lutheran refugees from Prussia founded the Barossa, Hahndorf, and Lobethal. Today the Barossa is Australia's top wine region, with German bakeries and Christmas markets still going.
Working Holidays
25K
Germans start a Working Holiday in Australia each year
One of Australia's largest WHV partners. Open to citizens 18 to 30, granting 12 months of work, study, and travel, extendable to 2 to 3 years.
Easy for Germans
120K+
Germans already live in Australia
Fourth-largest immigrant group. Adelaide, Melbourne, and Brisbane have established German communities. Lufthansa connects Frankfurt to Sydney via Singapore in 22 hours.

Before you fly
Things every German should know about Australia.
Drive on the left
Australians drive on the left side of the road, opposite of Germany. Your German Führerschein is valid for short stays. Note: Sydney to Cairns is a 28-hour drive, further than Hamburg to Madrid.
No long-distance rail
Australia has no ICE equivalent. Distances between cities are vast and intercity rail is sparse. For city-to-city, fly Qantas, Virgin, or Jetstar. Drive only for road-trip stretches like the Great Ocean Road.
Type I plug adapter
Australia uses Type I outlets at 230V. German Schuko (Type F) plugs do not fit, but voltage matches so no transformer needed, just a €3 adapter.
Customs is unusually strict
Declare all food, wood, leather, and plant material. Wurst, Brot, Holzschnitzereien, even unopened packets, all need declaring. AUD 5,500+ fines for undeclared items, no exceptions.
From our travelers
What Germans say about us.
“Booked Qantas to Sydney for a research conference, realised three weeks out I still needed the visa. Application took maybe 4 minutes. Approval was in my inbox by the next morning, before my U-Bahn even reached work.”

“Working Holiday Visa was already approved when I added the parents, who wanted to fly out for two weeks. Their tourist eVisas were back within hours. Clean process, exactly as described, no surprises. That is what I needed.”

“Family trip to the Barossa for a 30th wedding anniversary. Four biometric Reisepässe, four applications, all approved within a working day. The Patientenbrief tip saved us at customs with my mother's medication.”

Questions, answered
Australia eVisa FAQ for German travellers.
Yes. All German passports issued since November 2007 are biometric (ePass) with an embedded chip. The chip is what allows Australia's SmartGate at Sydney, Melbourne, and Brisbane to process you in seconds. Any valid German passport from 2007 onward works for both the eVisa application and arrival.
Three processing speeds are available, Express is the fastest. Most German applications are approved within 24 business hours, regardless of the speed selected. With the time difference, applications submitted in German evening hours often clear by the next morning. See the pricing card for the speed options.
From USD $209, with all government fees, document review, support, and tracking included. Three processing speeds are offered, see the pricing card on this page for current rates.
Yes. The Australia eVisa is the same model as the EU's upcoming ETIAS or the US ESTA, an electronic travel authorisation linked to your passport, applied for online. It is valid for one year, multi-entry, with stays up to 90 days per visit. Germans must hold one before boarding any flight to Australia.
Apply with the passport you will actually travel on. The eVisa is linked to your passport number, a different number on the new book will not match. Wait for the new passport before applying. Standard Reisepass renewal at the Bürgeramt takes 4 to 6 weeks; the Express-Reisepass is roughly 3 working days.
Yes. Every traveller entering Australia needs an individual eVisa, regardless of age. Each child files a separate application linked to their own German Kinderreisepass or biometric passport. Germany has issued individual passports for minors since 2012, so every child has their own document already.
You apply based on your travel passport, not your German residence permit. If your passport is from an Australia eVisa-eligible country, apply with that passport. If not, you will need a different Australian visa class. The Niederlassungserlaubnis on its own does not qualify you for the eVisa.
Minor offences such as old, expunged convictions usually do not prevent approval. Felonies, recent serious crimes, or convictions involving violence, drugs, or sexual offences can lead to denial under Australia's character requirements. Disclose accurately, as misrepresentation is itself grounds for refusal regardless of the underlying offence.
Not directly. Australia uses its own SmartGate system at Sydney, Melbourne, and Brisbane. Any biometric German passport works with SmartGate, and the line is typically faster than the staffed lane. EU e-Gates programmes only apply on the European side of the trip.
No. Germany's RHCA with Australia covers immediately necessary medical treatment in public hospitals for German visitors, but does not cover GP visits beyond essential care, ambulance transfers, dental, repatriation home, or treatment in private hospitals. Take out private travel insurance regardless. Carry your European Health Insurance Card (EHIC) plus your German passport.
Not from inside Australia on the eVisa. The Working Holiday Visa is a separate class, open to German citizens aged 18-30, granting up to 12 months of work, study, and travel (extendable to 2 to 3 years through specified regional work). It must be applied for and approved before you arrive. Germany is one of Australia's largest WHV partner countries, around 25,000 Germans start a WHV each year.
CBD and THC products are tightly controlled in Australia regardless of German availability, do not pack them. For prescription medications, carry the original German packaging plus a Patientenbrief or English-translated prescription. Some German-prescribed drugs are controlled substances in Australia, particularly opioid painkillers and ADHD treatments. Check the Therapeutic Goods Administration (TGA) list before flying.
