Why Italians choose Australia
Why 120,000+ Italians visit Australia every year.
Italian heritage
1851
year Italians joined the Australian gold rush
Italian families have been here since the 1850s gold rush. Melbourne, Adelaide, and the Riverina hold the biggest communities.
Caffè culture
1956
year Melbourne's first espresso bar opened
Pellegrini's on Bourke Street brought the Gaggia to Australia. Melbourne is now a world top-five coffee city, with Lygon Street the Italian-Australian heart.

Before you fly
Things every Italian traveller should know about Australia.
Drive on the left
Australians drive on the left side of the road, opposite of Italy. Your Italian patente is valid for short stays. Sydney to Cairns is a 28-hour drive, more than Milan to Athens.
Don't pack the salumi
Australia bans imported meats and most dairy. Prosciutto, salame, mortadella, formaggi non-stagionati, all confiscated at customs. Sealed olive oil and dry pasta are usually fine. AUD 5,500+ fines for undeclared food.
The coffee menu is different
Espresso is everywhere thanks to Italian migrants, but the local order is a "flat white" (ristretto + textured milk) or "long black" (espresso + hot water). Caffè americano is rare. Order in English: "I'll have a flat white."
Type I plug adapter
Australia uses Type I outlets at 230V. Italian Type L plugs do not fit, but voltage matches Italy's 230V so no transformer needed, just a €3 adapter.
From our travelers
What Italians say about us.
“Volo Qantas via Singapore già prenotato, mi sono accorto del visto la sera prima. Domanda fatta in cinque minuti dal divano, eVisa arrivato in posta il mattino dopo. Mai più stress di consolato.”

Questions, answered
Australia eVisa FAQ for Italian travellers.
Australia's biosecurity rules are unusually strict. Imported meats (prosciutto, salame, mortadella) and most dairy (formaggio non-stagionato) are prohibited or heavily restricted. Sealed olive oil and commercially packaged dry pasta are usually allowed. Declare every food item on arrival, undeclared items can result in AUD 5,500+ fines.
Three processing speeds are available, Express is the fastest. Most Italian applications are approved within 24 business hours, regardless of the speed selected. With the time difference, applications submitted in Italian evening hours typically clear by the next morning. See the pricing card for the speed options.
From USD $209, with all government fees, document review, support, and tracking included. Three processing speeds are offered, see the pricing card on this page for current rates.
Yes. All Italian passports issued since 2006 are biometric with an embedded chip. The chip allows Australia's SmartGate at Sydney, Melbourne, and Brisbane to process you automatically. Any valid biometric Italian passport works for both the eVisa application and arrival.
Apply with the passport you will actually travel on. The eVisa is linked to your passport number, a different number on the new book will not match. Wait for the new passport. Standard Italian passport (Questura) renewal takes around 30 days; expedited processing is possible for urgent travel with documented proof.
Yes. Every traveller entering Australia needs an individual eVisa, regardless of age. Each child files a separate application linked to their own Italian passport. Italy has issued individual biometric passports for minors since 2010, so every child has their own document already.
You apply based on your travel passport, not your Italian residence permit. If your passport is from an Australia eVisa-eligible country, apply with that passport. If not, you will need a different Australian visa class. The permesso di soggiorno on its own does not qualify you for the eVisa.
Minor contravvenzioni and old, expunged convictions usually do not prevent approval. Reati gravi involving violence, drugs, or sexual offences can lead to denial under Australia's character requirements. Disclose accurately, as misrepresentation is itself grounds for refusal regardless of the underlying offence.
Not directly. Australia uses its own SmartGate system at Sydney, Melbourne, and Brisbane. Any biometric Italian passport works with SmartGate, and the line is typically faster than the staffed lane. EU e-Gates programmes only apply on the European side of the trip.
Yes. The Australia eVisa is the same model as the EU's upcoming ETIAS or the US ESTA, an electronic travel authorisation linked to your passport, applied for online. It is valid for one year, multi-entry, with stays up to 90 days per visit. Italian citizens must hold one before boarding any flight to Australia.
Not from inside Australia on the eVisa. The Working Holiday Visa is a separate class, open to Italian citizens aged 18-30, granting up to 12 months of work, study, and travel (extendable to 2 to 3 years through specified regional work). It must be applied for and approved before you arrive. Italy is a Working Holiday partner country, around 10,000 Italians start a WHV in Australia each year.
CBD and THC products are tightly controlled in Australia regardless of Italian availability, do not pack them. For prescription medications, carry the original packaging plus your ricetta or an English-translated prescription. Some Italian-prescribed drugs are controlled substances in Australia, particularly opioid painkillers and ADHD treatments. Check the Therapeutic Goods Administration (TGA) list before flying.
