Before you fly

Things every Briton should know about Australia.

The NHS does not travel

The UK-Australia Reciprocal Healthcare Agreement covers some emergency care for British passport holders, but not GP visits, dental, or repatriation. Take out private travel insurance regardless.

Pubs close earlier

Most pubs shut between 10pm and midnight, last orders around 9:30pm. Beer also runs 4.5%+ ABV, stronger than the average UK pint. A "schooner" is two-thirds of a pint.

The sun is fierce

UV index regularly hits 11+ in summer. SPF 30 daily, even on cloudy days. Roughly 4x the UK summer UV, sunburn possible inside 15 minutes.

Distances are vast

Sydney to Cairns is a 28-hour drive, the equivalent of London to Naples. Internal flights between cities are usually cheaper and saner than long road trips.

From our travelers

What Britons say about us.

Booked the flights, then realised we needed a visa. Filled out the form on the Northern line, eVisa came through the next morning. More efficient than my mortgage paperwork.

London, UK · Express · Sydney

Father-in-law's 70th in Melbourne, six weeks notice. Paid for Express, approval back in 18 hours. Not bad for something I was sure would be a faff.

Four passports, one application. Submitted Sunday evening, all four approvals back by Wednesday lunchtime. Simpler than getting the kids to agree on dinner.

Questions, answered

Australia eVisa FAQ for UK travellers.

Not from inside Australia on the eVisa. The Working Holiday Visa is a separate visa class, open to British citizens aged 18-30, granting up to 12 months of work, study, and travel (extendable to 2 to 3 years through specified regional work). It must be applied for and approved before you arrive. If you've already used the eVisa for a tourist visit, you'd need to leave Australia, apply for the WHV from the UK or another country, then return. The 90-day stay is the maximum per visit on the eVisa, and overstaying triggers an automatic 3-year bar on returning.

Three processing speeds are available, Express is the fastest. Most UK applications are approved within 24 business hours, regardless of the speed selected. With the time difference, applications submitted in the UK evening are often back in your inbox by British morning. See the pricing card for the speed options.

From USD $209, with all government fees, document review, support, and tracking included. Three processing speeds are offered, see the pricing card on this page for current rates.

All UK passports issued since 2006 carry the chip. If yours was issued before then, it has expired by now anyway. The chip is what allows SmartGate at Sydney, Melbourne, and Brisbane to read your passport on arrival, so any current UK passport works.

Apply with the passport you'll actually travel on. The eVisa is linked to your passport number, so a different number on the new book will not match. Wait for the new passport before applying. Standard UK passport renewal currently takes around 3 weeks; the in-person premium service is one working day.

Yes. Every traveller entering Australia needs an individual eVisa, regardless of age. That includes infants and minors. Each child files a separate application linked to their own UK passport. The UK abolished family passports in 1998, so every child holds their own passport already.

You apply based on your travel passport, not your UK residency. If your passport is from an Australia eVisa-eligible country, apply with that passport. If it is not eligible, you'll need a different visa class. ILR on its own does not qualify you for the eVisa.

Minor offences such as old, spent convictions usually do not prevent approval. Serious or recent convictions involving violence, drugs, or sexual offences can lead to denial under Australia's character requirements. Disclose accurately, as misrepresentation on the form is itself grounds for refusal regardless of the underlying offence.

Not directly. Australia uses its own SmartGate system at Sydney, Melbourne, and Brisbane airports. Any chipped UK passport works with SmartGate, and the line is usually faster than the staffed lanes. UK programmes only help on the British side of the trip.

CBD and THC products are tightly controlled in Australia regardless of UK availability. Do not pack them, even small amounts can result in seizure or fines. For prescription medications, carry the original packaging and a doctor's letter. Some UK-prescribed drugs are controlled substances in Australia, particularly opioid-based painkillers and ADHD treatments such as Elvanse. Check the TGA (Therapeutic Goods Administration) list before flying.

Yes. Both are electronic travel authorisations linked to your passport, applied for online. The Australia eVisa is valid for one year, multi-entry, with stays up to 90 days per visit. The UK ETA is the British equivalent for visitors entering the UK without a visa.

No. Once approved, your eVisa is electronically linked to your passport and Australian border officials pull it up automatically at SmartGate or the staffed counter. We still recommend keeping the email confirmation on your phone for peace of mind.
